Breathing may be studied in different characteristics: length, rhytm,amplitude, time,its gravity centrum……One of the most important characteristic is the lenght, breathing length is good when short, in expiration quite and gentle without jumps.
Generally in normal conditions the air in exit from nose is advertible at 25 centimeters, if you step after step expire slower and deepier your length will be impercectible and durable too.

Internal Qi Gong contein three principal types of exercises that not require too much difficults.
The first one is Relaxing Qi Gong to help your body flows in relax; this exercise is a preliminary for other exercises.
You should assume the right position (Diao Shen), supine, expand your back with head on cushion, arms and legs must be in natural position, palms loking down.
Breath control (Diao Xi) should be do by nose and not too much deep but ever more soft and short in length.

Attention concentrated ( Yi Shou ) consist in the most active part of this exercise; during inspiration you must thing on body portion that you want relax and during expiration relax it.
For instance: first focalize your attention on head, relax it, then pass to shoulders and so on, at last all body will relaxed.
There are also fish movements to return in normal conditions, generally they consists in frictions on head and little contractions before stand up.

The second terapeutic Qi exercise is the Qi Gong internal regolation, also this is a passive exercise, it is based on five points one of them, the first is to do a Relaxing Qi Gong, a Diao Shen that may be do in three different kinds: like Relaxing Qi Gong, sleeping sideway or seat down on a short chair.
All three position shoul be vertebral coloum well stright.
Position depends on your healt conditions.
Yi Shou use different phrases that may traduced as I am quite, I seat qui te and my body fill good or my body is relaxed….
There should be a syncronizzation between breathing and mind repeting pharses.
For instance.
I am quite, during I you inspire, in AM you do a little stop in riention and in QUITE expire.
The Diao Xi may have two system that depending from individual conditions.
The soft tecnique and hard one, in the first you should close mouth and point tongue on palatine,then you inspire by nose slowly, expand abdom, now you should relax toungue, open mouth a little bit and expire from both nose and mouth, when abdom is empty do a natural pause and restart.
In the second, the intence tecnique you point tongue on palatine, inspre slowly by nose, and innagine air go down to dan tian region ( belly ), do a stop with tongue insome position, relax tongue and expire only with nose.
When you practaise these exercise yiou may use a special phrase like I AM QUITE AND REAXED this words should be repeted in to your mind and divised during the three respiration phases; for instance: Inspire and think I AM, retain air and think QUITE, expire and think AND RELAXED.
After a time of these exercise you will be enter in Rujing state a very good quite state.
In Qi gong internal regolation are used mainly three places where point attention ( Yi Shou ) They are Shan Zhong ( more or less in hearh zone) Dan Tian ( Belly ) and Yong Quan ( under feet plant before plantar arch).
We have another basic exercise called vitality Qi Gong that came from Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian meditation joint.
Qi gong for vitality have not special phrases and consists in four points.
  1. Relax completely body and mind ( do internal regolation Qi gong )
  2. Prepare the position ( Diao Shen ) Lotus, alf lotus, seat down on a very little chair or stand up
  3. Breathing control ( Diao Xi ) should be short in length but long in time without sofferences
  4. The focalizzation, ( Yi Shou ) is very good on dan tian zone.
In anycases your back shoud be stright and nec well up.
There are three types of breathing: simple, deep and inverted.
In simple you mantein a regolar breathing and not spend too much attention on it, in deep you do a slow abdominal respiration ( Buddhish ) and in inverted do contrary, in practaise when abdom expand you expire and when it is contract you inspire, this last brething system came from Taoist metodology.
As you see these exercises not require hard positions and sometime dangerous air titentions, at this level the attention is concentrated on wheel brething.
Naturly there are other more complex exercises in which are studied and developed different Qi body roads.
A very important exercise is the balancing air between left and right nostril, this exercie is now in sanscrito ( Devanagari ) as nadi sodhana.
The ideal position is the lotus, at first you should expire with both nostrils and:
  1. inspire soft, slowly and in silence only with left nostril the right nostril may be obtured by thumb finger.
  2. At the end of inspiration close both nostrils for a couple of seconds.
  3. You should close left nostril with little finger and expire on right, slow, soft ….
  4. When lungs are empty inspire with right nostril.
  5. Close both nostrils, wait two seconds, open left and so on.
The time for inspiration and expiration should be the some.
At the beginning don't worry about proportion between inspiration and expiration but when you will be able anogh you should tray to equalize the two function.
Remember, there is not breathing ritention, you may continue the exercise as you will and not practaise it immediately after meals.
There are also more intensive Qi gong exercises very good for strong people and usefull as training for apnea subs.
Personally I think that a true martial art is necessary a survival school, so is necessary survive were others die.
Water expecially sea water was our home in ancient times, also now into mamy we grow up swinwing into amniotic liquid principally composed of water.
The following ritention tecniques must be read very carefully so warning, we can't live without air.
If Qi gong for healt is concentrate on how you breath, Qi gong more intensive is concetrate on how you don't breath.
In sanscrito these exercises are called Kumbahaka There are psicologic factors that produce immertion reflex, this conditioning is comon to all sea mammals as so as sea lions, seals, dolphines, whales….

The mid air ritention is when you pass from 20 to 90 second without breathing.
In these conditions body reactionas are more intensive, you resist whenever life conditioned reflexes spread out brething actions, there are not dangers if you do it progressively.
